New State Smoke-Free Law
On Nov. 16, 2006, a new smoke-free workplaces law goes into effect in Hawaii. The law prohibits smoking in all workplaces and numerous public places across the state. The legislation has many consequences, among them no more smoking in bars and all restaurants as well as in hotel lobbies, airports and many other areas.

Tobacco-Free Me Starter Kit Information
The Tobacco-Free Me Starter Kit is designed for health-care providers to assist patients who want to be Tobacco-Free. It includes a brochure with a quit, or "start," plan. The start plan includes setting a start date, identifying support, problem-solving skills, and resources for success. A pocket pal is included as a pocket version of the patient's start plan for easy reference. The kit also includes medication-information cards with descriptions of nicotine-replacement therapies and mood modifiers. The descriptions include medical names, directions, usual dose, availability, precautions, and cost. There's an evaluation card that patients can return to their provider or mail to Tobacco-Free Kauai. We also include a photo-laminating sheet so patients can laminate a photo of a family member or friend as a reminder to become tobacco free. For more information contact Cara Sadira.

Smoke Free Area Sign
Tobacco-Free Kauai designed and produced this attractive sign to help businesses and individuals promote smoke-free zones in public and private areas. Smoke-free zones help promote restrictions on Environmental Tobacco Smoke as well as the idea that the vast majority of people do not use tobacco products.

We encourage anyone to download a copy of the sign and post it in their place of business, their home, garage, automobile or anywhere else it is useful.

Sample of a Smoke-Free Workplace Policy
The vast majority of businesses prefer to be smoke free, but not all have the wherewithal to develop a policy to cover this safety measure.

Tobacco-Free Kauai, in conjunction with the American Cancer Society, has developed a smoke-free workplace policy that is simple to understand and covers most of the relevant issues. Your workers and the public will thank you for it.

To use the policy, simply download the document at left, make any necessary alterations, print it out and put it in place for your business.

Remember: tobacco-free, clean air is everyone's right!

Kauai Smoke-Free Workplace Ordinance
The Kauai smoke-free ordinance was conceived in 2002 and enacted Jan. 1, 2003. The Coalition spent many hours meeting with Kauai County Council members, the public and among ourselves to craft the best bill possible at the time. The result of these efforts is a bill that bans smoking in all restaurants and workplaces with 5 or more employees per shift.

We are proud of this, the first county-level smoke-free workplace ordinance ever, and look forward to working with our elected officials to strengthen the law and expand its scope.
