Tobacco-Free Kauai Coalition Tobacco-Free Kauai began in 1997 when the Tobacco Prevention and Education Program within the Hawaii Department of Health began a concerted effort to develop a permanent presence on the Neighbor Islands. By working with a Neighbor Island Coalition Coordinator, TPEP was able to provide guidance over a wide range of tobacco-control issues in all counties. Over the past 10 years Tobacco-Free Kauai has grown and provided support and expertise for all the major institutions on the island, from the schools, to the workplace, to the community. We are proud of our achievements yet determined to help develop a future that lives up to our name: Tobacco-Free Kauai.

John Hunt Chairman John Hunt is the Administrative Officer for the Kaua`i District Health Office. He is committed to keeping the Island of Kaua`i at the forefront of tobacco control in the State of Hawaii. Under his leadership, the TFK coalition has received over $370,000 in grant funding to bring tobacco cessation programs to our schools, healthcare facilities, and communities. Mary Williamson Vice Chair Mary Williamson is the Executive Director for the American Cancer Society on Kauai. Because the Society aims to double the number of lives saved by 2015, clean air and smoking cessation are a high priority. Tobacco use contributes to one-third of cancer deaths worldwide, and tobacco-related cancer is the number-one cause of cancer mortality on Kauai. Email: maryw@tobaccofreekauai.com

Sandy Higgins Secretary/Treasurer Sandy Higgins is the Smoking Cessation Counselor at Wilcox Hospital and visits all identified smokers admitted to the hospital. A certified cessation specialist, Sandy can provide one-on-one counseling in her office as well as smoking cessation counseling and classes to the public. She also participates in outreach and community events to promote tobacco control and cessation. Email: Sandy

Charles Roessler Charles Roessler is the Neighbor Island Coalition Coordinator for Kauai. He has worked with Tobacco-Free Kauai from the beginning, serving as Chair and now as coordinator. He takes pride in the many accomplishments of the coalition and looks forward to further endeavors in creating a tobacco-free Kauai.
